Position Paper on Attending Physicians and Residents
An attending physician is ultimately responsible legally and ethically for the care and treatment of his patient in the hospital setting regardless the amount of responsibility given the resident staff in teaching hospitals. Disputes and conflicts between the attending and house staff over the management of a patient should be resolved with the help of the chief of service and the medical board. Under no circumstances should such disputes be carried on in the patient’s presence.
