Position Paper on Attending Physician and House Staff
An attending physician is ultimately responsible for the ethical care and treatment of his patient in the hospital setting regardless the amount of responsibility given the resident staff in teaching hospitals. Disputes and conflicts between the attending and house staff over the management of a patient should be resolved by the chief of service and the medical board as necessary. Under no circumstances should such disputes be carried on in the patient’s presence or in the medical record.
